First cup, first book, and the sound.
Saturday, May 23. 7:00 AM. 85 people gathered at City Camp in Ebisu. This was the start of the first ever DOG-EAR RAVE.
Through the door, a cup of coffee first. No alcohol, anywhere. Instead, the tables were lined with 60 books selected by Tomodachi Honya. Some picked one up to read; some struck up a conversation with a stranger over a book. As the morning light came in, the room slowly warmed up.
Around 7:30, DJ ISSEI's turntables started spinning. People who had been listening from the edge of the room found a cue when someone started dancing — one, then two, joining the circle. Dancing in the morning, without alcohol, with only the sound and the books — that was the “Guilt-free pleasure.”
Folding the corner of a page is called a “dog-ear” — a marker for an important page you want to return to. We hoped this morning could become someone's dog-ear, too. That's the wish behind the name.
9:00, the event ended. People scattered — to work, to brunch, to their next plan. For a morning, the looks on their faces as they left felt surprisingly full. “If this exists, Monday isn't scary.” “I want to come again.” — voices like these have already reached us.
